Located in the district of Exuma is the protected area known as Exuma cays Land and Sea Park. It covers the area from Shroud Cay in the north to Bell Cay in the south. - Ilya Tolstoy, grandson of Russian author Leo Tolstoy, assembled a concerned group of forward-thinking Bahamian and North American conservationists in 1958, a naturalist himself, he realized that the chain of islands was under threat from developers who wanted to buy it. This led to the establishment of the BNT.
- It was the very first land and sea park established in the world. It spans almost 100,000 acres of ocean, islands, blue holes, coral reefs and estuaries. It was established in the year 1958 by The Bahamas National Trust.
- The park is mostly water, with marine animals as the queen conch, Nassau grouper, sea turtles and spiny lobster can be found. It is also home to a small mammal called the hutia, a land animal, several rare iguana species and marine birds such as terns and white-tailed tropicbirds.
