About The Mohatta Palace
The Mohatta Palace is a museum situated in Karachi of Pakistan. It was made in 1927 for Shivratan Mohatta from Rajasthan, India as his summer house. It was designed by Agha Ahmed Hussain who used pink stones from Jodhpur and yellow stone from Gizri. Mohatta left the castle after the partition of India. It is spread in an area of 18,500 sq ft. The museum remains open from Tuesday to Sunday between 11 am to 6 pm while it is closed on Monday. On Friday, there is a prayer break between 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. You can easily arrive there using bus number 20 or with Super Hasan Zai and Khan Coach. The ticket price to enter the castle is Rs 30 for an adult, however, children less than 12 years, senior citizens and school students do not have to pay any money to have a look of the museum.
Some Lesser Known Facts About The Mohatta Palace
- The owner of the house Shivratan was not less than Shah Jahan. Though Shah Jahan made Taj Mahal after the death of his wife while Shivratan made this palace so that his critically ill wife could survive. Doctors have told Mohatta that the refreshing winds of the sea can help her to cure so he build this luxurious palace for her.
- Mr Mohatta was not willing to leave the palace despite the great partition in fact he was forced by the government officials to vacate the palace for government office. Mr Mohatta was shocked and felt very hurt with this order. Though he left the palace overnight and also gave a note to the manager with keys. He has written that the politician concerned can simply request him rather than ordering him to leave the palace.
- There are also stories of palace being haunted by supernatural powers. One of which was of a museum guard who heard some party music in the palace's room. When he came to find than he was stunned to see that the wine glasses were floating in the air.
- There is not any particular story about why the palace is said to be haunted? But it is said if a dwelling place is left abandoned for years it became a home of restless spirits. Maybe this is a cause of Mohatta Palace being haunted.
- The palace also has a beautiful temple of lord Shiva on its terrace. It also had a basement with water pool having hot and cold water system attached. It is well designed to provide proper sunlight and comfort to the residents.
- Keeping aside the stories which could not be said that these are true or not, the palace is a beautiful piece of art and must be visited on the trip to Karachi.
