About Peterhof Palace

Peterhof Palace is a combination of historical palaces and gardens situated in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the construction of the palaces started in the year 1714 on the order of Peter the Great. The area covered by the complex exceeds 3934 hectares. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1990. The palace is also nicknamed "The Russian Versailles". The beautiful palace complex is a combined effort of various architects like Domenico Trezzini, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, and Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Peterhof Palace

The complex contains three palaces which are Marli Palace, Grand Palace, and Monplaisir Palace. The latter was the summer residence of the ruler. Kronstadt Island could be easily seen from here. There may be a chance that the ruler wanted to take an eye on his whole territory that's why he created these palaces.
Perhaps you will not believe the fact that in the construction of the palace the bonding between Peter and the architect Domenico Trezzini became such high that the ruler became the Godfather of Domenico's son.
The palace has a great inspiration of the Palace of Versailles as construction was started after some time of Peter's visit to France.
It was made with the Petrine Baroque style and after the construction of this palace the style became very common in Russia including the big construction like Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral was made using this style.
As Peter the Great wanted everything of top quality, he appointed Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond to design the garden because of his prior experience of working with Andre Le Notre. Andre is credited with designing the gardens of Versailles.
It is sad to say that the man who is credited with building this magnificent Palace complex had not even seen this palace. Peter died in 1725 while the palace was completed in 1728.
The garden complex is also astonishing with numerous beautiful fountains. Samsun Fountain being famous among all. The fountain was created to show the event of the Russian victory over Sweden. As the lion is an important element in the coat of arms of Sweden it shows tears on the face of a lion. It is named Samson as the victory was on St. Samson's Day.
The Grand Palace has 30 beautiful rooms including one ballroom. Though the palace is not as big as Buckingham Palace or Potala Palace it is beautifully decorated that takes you into the world of Russian royals.
The palace is a witness to a horrific massacre in the Second World War. Also, a memorial was built in the lower garden to give respect to the soldiers who lost their lives.
The site is visited by over five million people in a year.
The palace lost its name in 1944 and was named "Petrodvorets" by the Soviet government after the Second World War. It regained its original name in 1997.
