About Peterhof Palace
Peterhof Palace is a combination of historical palaces and gardens situated in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the construction of the palaces started in the year 1714 on the order of Peter the Great. The area covered by the complex exceeds 3934 hectares. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1990. The palace is also nicknamed "The Russian Versailles". The beautiful palace complex is a combined effort of various architects like Domenico Trezzini, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, and Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Peterhof Palace

  • The complex contains three palaces which are Marli Palace, Grand Palace, and Monplaisir Palace. The latter was the summer residence of the ruler. Kronstadt Island could be easily seen from here. There may be a chance that the ruler wanted to take an eye on his whole territory that's why he created these palaces.
  • Perhaps you will not believe the fact that in the construction of the palace the bonding between Peter and the architect Domenico Trezzini became such high that the ruler became the Godfather of Domenico's son.
  • The palace has a great inspiration of the Palace of Versailles as construction was started after some time of Peter's visit to France.
