About Catherine Palace
Catherine Palace is a palace situated in Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin) in Russia. The construction of the palace started in 1723 and completed in 1756. Russian Tsar used this palace as their summer residence. It was made with Baroque architecture by Johann Friedrich Braunstein but was later renovated and constructed in Neoclassical architecture in the 1770s. It is now converted into a museum and is open for public visits. The opening timings are 12:00 to 7:00 pm from Wednesday to Sunday on Monday it remains open until 8:00 pm while it remains closed on Tuesday. The ticket to visit the palace is 520 rubles for an adult while no amount is charged for children under 18.
How To Reach Catherine Palace
The palace is located 30 kilometer away in the south direction of St.Petersburg. You can reach there after a small ride from the city.If you prefer public transport than you have to board suburban trains from Vitebsy Railway Terminal or Kupchino Railway Station and after the ride get off at Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin) station. After that a bus ride on route number 371 or 382 leave you at the required destination or you can take a minbus taxi number 377 to reach there. Going there with a metro is also a great option. The closest metro station is Moskovskaya from where you can take minbus taxi number 342 or 545. Buses are also available from Zvezdnaya and Kupchino metro stations to the palace.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Catherine Palace
- Do you know during reconstruction work in 1751, sculptures made with about 100 kilograms of gold were placed in the palace?
- The palace was severely damaged by the German forces during the Second World War and only a hollow shell of the palace was left. It was reconstructed in 1957 under the guidance of Alexander Kedrinsky.

- There is also a beautiful park located outside the palace which is decorated with stone staircases, ponds, trellised arbors, and parterres.

- The palace suffered a fire in 1820, which damaged Rastrelli?s chapel and other places close to it. It was renovated by Vasily Stasov.
- The Great Hall in the palace is the most important place to visit. It has gilded carving, beautiful sculptures, and about dozen of chandeliers. It has an area of about 1000 square meters. The eastern windows give a view of the park while the west side windows open at the palace plaza. It looks more beautiful in the evening when lamps are lit in these chandeliers and the interior shines with the light.

- The Courtiers-in-Attendance is a Small Dining Room close to the Great Hall. Its ceiling was painted by a student of the Russian School. There are also a White formal Dining Room and Green Dining Room in the palace

- The portrait Hall is decorated with paintings of Empress Catherine I and Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, Empress Catherine II. Also a painting of Natalya Alexeyevna, sister of Peter the Great.

- The palace is not less than other palaces in St. Petersburg. The luxurious interior like Chinese silk, rosewood, mahogany, Carrara marble chimneys was used to decorate the palace.
