Hallstatt town is known for the oldest salt mine located town in the world. The town is the also the eye-catching tourist attraction due to its beauty mainly famous for the located Charnel house in the city present in St. Michaels Chapel. The bone house with assemblage of beautifully painted 600 skulls in the ossuary.

The charnel is filled with a collection of 1200 skulls half with artistic work and half as part of the ossuary.
In the year 1720, a tradition began in Hallstatt where skulls are being dug up and then bleached up and kept in sunlight and after those family members are called to know the date of birth and death date and closest relation with person name to be painted and engraved on the skull of the particular human.
The charnel is used to be called the place for the second funeral after the graveyard.
In the 20th century, a new tradition began of digging up newly graved bodies in last 10-15 years as to paint and label their names or the initials on their skulls but in before this in 19th-century old bodies were part of this tradition only.
After the end of this painting skull tradition in the year 1983, a women died with golden tooth who wished to be buried in the charnel house and her body was the last one to be buried in the charnel in the year 1995.
