About Van Gogh Museum
Van Gogh Museum is also a famous tourist place in Amsterdam. It is situated close to the famous Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum. The museum is fully devoted to the works of Vincent van Gogh and has the largest collection of his paintings and drawings all over the world. It is visited by over two million people in a year and is also the most-visited museum in the country. Founded on 2 June 1973, it is on the 23rd rank among the most visited art place all over the world. You can easily arrive there using Tram number 2, 3, 5, 12, 16, 24. A ticket ranging from 10 to 19 Euros per person is charged by the authority. Gerrit Rietveld and Kisho Kurokawa are credited for designing the building.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Van Gogh Museum
- An important fact about the museum is that it faced theft of paintings two times. The first time was in 1991 when four men which included two museum guards were involved in the theft. At this time twenty paintings were stolen. Though all the paintings were recovered 35 minutes later three paintings including Still Life with Bible, Wheatfield with Crows, and Still Life with Fruit were severely damaged in the theft. The second time, two paintings were stolen in 2002. But it took a long time to get these paintings back. It was found by the Guardia di Finanza in Naples, Italy in September 2016.
- The museum is home to about 400 drawings, 200 paintings, and 700 letters by the artist.
- The building of the museum is designed in such a way to allow a large amount of skylight in the place taking care of geometric shapes and light,
- The new entrance building which is started in September 2015 is made up of a glass structure. It connects the old building and more recent temporary exhibitions wing,
