The Musee d'Orsay is a museum located on the bank of river Siene. It displays French art ranging from furniture, paintings, sculptures, etc. It is considered one of the best exhibitions of impressionist art in the world and a treat for students of art and artists.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Musee d Orsay
- The museum is located on the site of what was known as "Gare d'Orsay", it was earlier a railway station and hotel. Its construction was finished in 1900. It was turned into a museum in the 1980s. Gaetana Aulenti was behind the new interior design of the museum.

- Way back in the time, before the train station and museum existed, the building established there was Palais d'Orsay. The administrative building was operational from 1810 to 1898. After this, the task was brought upon 3 architects to build a train station.

- The museum has art from the most famous impressionist art movement artists. The work collected here includes Vincent van Gogh's Self-Portrait, Gustave Courbet's The Origin of the World, Renoir's Bal du moulin de la Galette, and more.

- Its architecture is an impressive and interesting feature of the building. The outside design of the museum consists of an enormous stone façade with a huge clock. It has retained its railway station look from the outside.

- During the Second World War, the railway station was used as a mailing center for packages to prisoners of war. Upon the ending of the war as the French prisoners of war returned home, this railway station became a reception center for them.

- In 1986, upon its inauguration, the museum was ready to put on the exhibition. However, the process took 6 months to install the 2000 or so paintings, 500 sculptures, and other artifacts. The inauguration took place on December 9th, 1986, done by Francois Mitterrand, former French President.
