About Hunan Museum

Hunan Museum is a regional museum located in the Hunan province of China. The construction of the museum completed in 1951, however, it was open for the public five years later in 1956. Chen Jianmin is currently serving as the president of the museum. The area covered in the museum complex is approximately 50000 square meters while its constructed area is twenty thousand square meters.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Hunan Museum

The museum remained closed for public access for five years starting from 18 June 2012 to 29 November 2017 for the redevelopment and expansion works.
It has over 180 thousand objects on display which includes treasure found in the tombs of the Marquis of Dai and Mawangdui.
The museum owns a huge collection of bronze wares belonging to the Zhou and Shang dynasties, calligraphy, and paintings.
Being the largest historical and art museum in the whole province, it is an important place in Hunan
The site is co-constructed by both local and central governments.
You can see the Western Han funerary banner belonging to the tomb of Xin Zhui and Mawangdui.
There is also an eighteenth-century painting named "Grapes and Mantis" made by Ma Quan which is placed in the museum.
