It was a mosque also known as Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque but is now converted into museum located in Istanbul, Turkey.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Hagia Sophia
- At the time it was founded in the sixth century it was a cathedral in Constantinople but later on, it was converted into a mosque and then to a museum.
- The dimensions of the structure are surprising as it is not built of steel. According to the book "Gardner's Art Through the Ages: A Global History" it was a plan to make the dome 270 feet long and 240 feet wide, however, the actual structure is 108 feet in diameter and 180 feet high.

- The two men were assigned to build the cathedral which are named Anthemius and Isidore the Elder.
- It got various name by the time. It was called Magna Ecclesia in Latin and Megale Ekklesia in Greek which means Great Church. It got its name Hagia Sophia in about 430 CE. It was named Ayasofya and its present name is the Ayasofya Müzesi.
- Some people believe that the weeping column which is located in the northwest portion of the church have healing powers.
