About Rock Art Sites of Tadrart Acacus
Tadrart Acacus is a mountain range located in the desert of western Libya. The site is a part of the Sahara desert. It is located in the east of Ghat city towards the north approximately 100 kilometers from the Algerian border. It is important because of the presence of prehistoric rock art. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1985 while was placed on the list of endangered sites from 2016 onwards.

- There are paintings from 12000 BCE to 100 CE which shows the cultural and natural transformations around the area.
- The processed milk lipids kept on ceramics are also found from the site which is estimated at about 7,500 BP.
- Rock art was completely ignored at the time of Muammar Gaddafi's rule. Also at the time site was endangered for the use of techniques to search hidden petroleum underground.
- The site was also subject to vandalism. Some people put their names on the rocks while others deliberately destroy the heritage using some chemicals. The site was constantly looted and destroyed by the developers.
