About Stonehenge
It is a monument about three kilometer from Amesbury. Each stone is about 13 feet to seven feet high and weighs around 25 tons.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Stonehenge
- Before visiting the place, you must know the fact that the monument is very old. It was believed to have made in between 2400 and 2200 BC while the circular earth bank and ditch is more older that belongs to 3100 BC.
- It is sad to say that the people who made it had not developed any language that's why it is difficult to explore the monument without any written document.
- According to some archaeologists, the place could be their burial ground as they found some remains of 50,000 bones belonging to about 63 men, women, and children. The remains are estimated of 3000 BC while some of them belong to 2500 BC.
- I wonder how they manage at the time but some of the stones are brought from about 200 miles away from the place.
- According to some ancient culture, some of the stones have healing powers.
- There are also some stories relating to Stonehenge in Arthurian legend according to it the monument was removed by wizard Merlin from Ireland and rebuilt it in Wiltshire. In Ireland, these are erected by giants but Merlin built it as a memorial to three thousand nobles who gave their lives in battle with the Saxons.
- Also they found a body of a 7th century Saxon man while exploring the site.
- The site is visited by over a million tourist in a year.
- In 1985, there was a violent rage at the place between travellers and police when they launched the Stonehenge Free Festival and police blocked the road seven miles from the place. At the time, 16 travellers were sent to hospital.
