About Jantar Mantar
It is an observatory created by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the year 1724. It has 13 architectural astronomy instruments having a height of 220 meters. It was made to compile with astronomical tables and to predict the movements of the sun, planets and moon.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Jantar Mantar
- You can easily arrive at the place by taking a metro which you have to get down at Patel Chowk station and take a rickshaw from there.
- The observatory is open from six in the morning to six in the evening and Indians have to pay only 15 rupees to enter the premises. While if you are a foreign citizen then you have to pay 200 INR to visit the place. There are no extra charges for the still camera but extra twenty-five rupees are charged for Video Cameras.
- The basic sundial was modified to make the Samrat Yantra which is used to determine various factors relating to heavenly bodies like declination angle of the planets.
- Although the observatory was manufacture over two century before but an intelligent art was used and the instruments are placed in such a position that the visitors can witness the celestial bodies with naked eyes.
- The word Jantar from its name means Jantra or yantar which means calculation instruments while Mantar means mantra which means calculate. The whole name Jantar Mantar means calculation instruments.
- The place is also popular for the political attention as it is situated near the Parliament House. Many people gather at the place to show their revolt at the time of any political issue.
