It is a lake in the north of Alps mountain which is shared by two countries France and Switzerland.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Lake Geneva

It is one of the largest lakes in Western Europe having a length of 73 kilometers and a width of 14 kilometers. It is about 310 meters deep.
The water in the lake looks beautiful due to unusual blue color and transparency. If you wonder about the color it is due to remarkable fluctuations of level which is called seiches. Also the whole fluid mass in the lake swings from shore to shore.
Geneva city which is located on the shore of the lake is the second largest populated city in Switzerland.
The place is famous for its natural beauty and grab the attention of great personalities in the world. You will be glad to know that the famous actor Charlie Chaplin spent his final years at this place. The tourists can enjoy the visit to the vineyards, mountains view and much more.

The lake also has a galling past. According to Gregory of Tours and Marius Aventicensis, a tsunami hit the lake which destroyed the fort of Tauredunum causing various deaths in 563. It was also subject to pollution in 1960s which made it dangerous to swim at some beaches. Almost all of the fishes died in the 1980s due to heavy pollution in the lake.
