It is a lake which is situated 19 kilometer south of Whistler and 37 kilometer north of Squamish. It lies in Garibaldi Provincial Park which is a wildlife protected area.

About nine thousand years before the lava flow from the Mount Price and Clinker Peak volcanoes blocked the valley which made a natural dam which trapped natural water Sentinel Glacier and Sphinx Glacier and founded the lake.
