At the time it was known as the Ballarat Hotel. It is now declared a historic place and is now saved by Heritage New Zealand. The building is famous as haunted house in the town.

- According to the belief, room number one is haunted by a ghost of a young woman named "Rose." It is said she was murdered in this hotel in the 1880s.
- The town itself is called a ghost town as there are only ten living inhabitants in this town.
- Many ghost hunters come here so that they can encounter the spirit and also a visitor from Invercargill got an apparition of a woman in the photograph of an old post office in 2010.
- Also another visitor who experienced the turning on and off of an electric jug by itself in the night. However, he examined the jug in daytime and no defect was found to turn it on without deliberately switching it on. He became sure that it was an act of the spirit living in that hotel.
