The Russell hotel sits in the heart of The Rocks, a suburban locality, in the city of Sydney. Built in the lovely Queen Anne style architecture, it has a long history and is one of the oldest structures in the area. So it comes as no surprise, it's also known to be haunted.
Some Lesser Known Facts About The Russell Hotel
- Built in the year 1887 as a hotel, the foundations of the structure go back to the late 17th century. In 1788, the Convict's hospital was built to be used as the first general hospital in the country.
- Operating as a hospital, there were miracles as well as tragedies. During the bubonic plague, the site witnessed many deaths. Apart from a hospital, at some point in its history, the building was also used as a hostel for sailors.
- The estate is a heritage-listed hotel, meaning preserved and protected by the government of the country.
- Under the care of a surgeon named John White, the hospital cared for many sick convicts. During the bubonic plague, many failed to recover and accept treatment and as a result, died here. People believe that the spirits of the ill failed to pass into the other realm and stayed behind. The site is haunted by these patients, suffering still and wandering the grounds.
- Upon further investigation, it is revealed that the hotel bore witness to a number of murders. One such example is the murder of a sailor staying at the hostel in room no 8, allegedly killed by a prostitute. The site is considered a hotbed of paranormal activities, owing to its history and the series of unfortunate events.
- Another victim of the murder was Senior constable Henry Murrow. He was found dead in the year 1897 with a strange wound in the back of his head.
