About The Read House

Some Lesser Known Facts About The Read House
- The hotel was restored in the year 1926, built by George A. Fuller and Company of Washington, D.C. and designed by the architectural firm Holabird and Roche.

- The hotel offered 237 guest rooms and suites as well as a banquet room. The more famous rooms are the "Silver Ballroom" and the "Green Room." The Silver Ballroom is decorated with Waterford crystal chandeliers and silver leaf ornamental medallions.

- Originally, the structure was known as the Crutchfield House, named after the owners of the property. The Crutchfield family used the house as an inn as well. During the time, the railways were the primary source of business. As the house was located directly in front of the railway station, it facilitated the old house to grow and prosper.

- Sadly, a fire broke out and burnt the structure to the ground in 1867. This was when a man named John T Read stepped in and built the hotel in 1879. After its demolition in 1926, the building that stands today was then built by his son, Samuel R. Read.

- It underwent renovation again, in the year 2004 that cost $28 million! It has also scored a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Having a long history also comes with a tale or two of haunting. The hotel is said to be an active spot for paranormal activities. Guests have reported strange noises in the dead of the night, cold breezes, and sudden quick changes in temperature.

- The scariest part of the hotel is said to be room 311. Guests have often complained at the front desk, saying the room has an eerie atmosphere and they fail to fall asleep in this particular room. Legend has it that a woman named Annalisa Netherly haunts this room. Annalisa was a woman in the 1920s who came to stay at the hotel with her lover. The staff found her body in the bathtub, with her throat slit. The shock of the murder and the runaway lover led people to believe it to be a crime of passion; a jealous lover or a revenge murder, no one can say for sure.

- Another reason attributed to its haunting is the fact that Al Capone, the notorious gangster spent his time during his federal trial at the Read house. Other famous people who have stayed here are Oprah Winfrey, Gary Cooper, Winston Churchill, Bing Crosby, and Bob Hope.
