Considered as one of the most haunted places in England, the Mermaid Inn has a long history going back to the 11th century. Rye is a market town in east Sussex situated near the English channel called the Rye Camber. It has a beach known as the Rye harbor.

Some Lesser Known Facts About The Mermaid Inn

The Mermaid Inn has had a turbulent history involving the notorious Hawkhurst gang and other smugglers and incidents of violence. It is located on the pebbly Mermaid Street, neighbouring cottages and timber houses.
The place attracts people of all kinds. Its architecture, is a mix between centuries. Its cellars date from 1556 with 16th-century additions in the Tudor style. The use of dark oak gives it a smooth finish. The chimneys are stonecarved and the timber used is said to be used from broken ships at the harbor.
Among its tenants are historians and artists but also followers of the occult. Stories of varying nature have circulated for decades concerning spirits and ghosts of the old inhabitants of the Inn.
The most popular among these tales are the stories of Room no. 1, 16, and 17. People have reported seeing a woman usually dressed in white or grey who sits on the chair by the fireplace. People have left their dry clothes on the chair and later found them wet.
Another story is that of a man who has frightened people by walking through the bathroom walls into the main room. Some claim to see a gentlemen dressed in the style of olden times, sitting at the edge of their beds.
A rocking chair in the guest bedroom starts rocking by itself as the temperature in the room drops to icy cold. The spirit of a woman is said to be responsible for this. Ghosts of former smugglers, gang members and their mistresses are said to be wandering the property.
The Inn was captured and used as a stronghold by the Hawkhurst gang in the 1700s. A warning in room 17 reads, "The Kingsmill room (named after the founder of the gang) is said to be haunted by the ghost of Kingsmill's wife."
The building was listed as a Grade II building by the English government in the year 1951. It has been owned by Judith Blincow since 1993.
The building has a multitude of tunnels and secret passageways used by the gang. The establishment was used as a pub from the year 1913 and later during the World War II, as a garrison for Canadian officers.
