About The Driskill
One of the most famous luxury hotels in Austin is the Driskill. With a grand ballroom, fancy restaurants, and the unique Romanesque style architecture, it is a great spot for a weekend getaway and is notoriously haunted. It is a well-known landmark of Texas pride and the western splendor. It also attracts followers of the occult due to its history and reputation for being a hotbed of paranormal activities.
Some Lesser Known Facts About The Driskill
- The Driskill was inaugurated in the year 1886, built by Col. Jesse Driskill. He was a cattle baron who?d moved to Texas and bought the area on 6th street for $7,500.
- The structure standing today is interconnected. The original 4 storey building in the Romanesque style and the 13 storey annex which was constructed in the year 1930. There are 60 rooms for accommodation. There were two different entrances for men and women respectively. The men?s entrance boasted of a saloon, a cigar shop, and a billiard room. Whereas the women?s entrance allowed them to enter their rooms directly, avoiding the cigar shop and the cattlemen.
- In less than a year after its opening, Driskill was forced to close the hotel as he could afford its funding no longer, surviving a drought followed by a rough winter which ended in killing his cattle inventory. In 1888, The Druskill was sold to the Colonel?s brother-in-law.
- The hotel has hosted numerous notable personalities. Some of them include Louis Armstrong, President Lyndon Johnson and Claudia Taylor, Bill Clinton, Bill Murray, Charles Black, Jan Vogler, etc.
- The Driskill has a beautiful café and bakery, with white marble and painted glass doors. It offers 189 guest rooms (after renovation) .The main hall has pillars of white marble and a portrait of Col. Jesse Driskill adorns the wall.
- But with its charm and opulence, the Driskill also has a history of tragic events. In the year 1887, a little girl fell to her death off the grand staircase chasing after her ball.
- Another incident is famously quoted as thatof the 'suicide brides'. It happened twice, exactly 20 years apart, where two young wo men killed themselves on their honeymoon for unknown reasons. They both stayed in the room 525.
- Col. Driskill himself is said to be making the rounds of the hotel. Staff at the Driskill has reported unexplained whiffs of cigar and the sensation of a 'presence.' It is believed that he never recovered from the loss of his hotel.
