The town of Matjiesfontein has a rich history. Situated about 300 miles from the beautiful Cape Town, the city of Matjiesfontein preserves its charm. One of the preserved elements of the colonial-style includes the Lord Milner hotel. It is a reminder to the days of the Anglo-Boer War and the reign of Queen Victoria. It was built in the year 1889 by the Scottish man James Logan. It has secured a reputation for being haunted, considering its history.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Lord Milner Hotel
- The founder of Matjiesfontein died in the year 1920 and is buried in a little cemetery 10 km from Matjiesfontein. Built-in the year 1899, the hotel was used as a hospital for the military during the conflict with the British forces. About 10,000 troops were said to be camped around the village.

- Back in the day, the village was a fashionable health spa that attracted visitors from all over the world, some of which included Lord Randolph Churchill (father of Winston), Cecil John Rhodes, Rudyard Kipling, Olive Schreiner and the Duke of Hamilton, and the Sultan of Zanzibar.

- The village of Matjiesfontein is a National heritage site, i.e. it is to be preserved with the Rawdon family as custodians. David Rawdon is responsible for the preservation of the town in its state and the strip of Matjiesfontein that covers the post office, hotel, church, jail, railway station, cricket pitch, flour mill, waterworks, bank, antique petrol station, and other stores. They were bought by him.

- Named after Lord Alfred Milner, who was the governor of the Cape during the Anglo-Boer War. The hotel today offers single and 15 double rooms for accommodation. A trumpet summons its guests to dinner. A tribute to Victoriana, it takes one back to the old Karoo.

- It is no surprise that the site is among the most haunted places in South Africa, with its history of fortification and refuge for Jamieson Raid reformers, and the venue of controversial war crimes hearings. The spirits that linger are considered friendly and playful.

- One of them is the ghost of a girl named Lucy. Speculations suggest that she died in the hotel. Some have reported to seeing her wandering the halls and float upon the staircase. Sometimes, guests have heard unexplained voices in the middle of the night, which may be attributed to Lucy.

- The visitors have observed that upon a quiet night, one may hear a loud clatter and noise like a hundred glass plates were being shattered. But upon investigation, no proof of any destruction is found.
