Located at the beautiful St. Pete Beach in Florida, The Don CeSar is an iconic hotel. It is a luxury hotel that exudes sophistication and glamour. It is also dubbed as the "pink palace". It was a hot spot during the Jazz Age of the old and still remains a hub for the rich and influential.
Some Lesser Known Facts About The Don CeSar
- Thomas Rowe, the founder, had a dream of building a "pink palace". And so to fulfill this dream, he bought around 80 acres of land in the year 1924. It was then designed by Henry Dupont. Its architecture is unique, considering its locality, it is best described as a blend between the Mediterranean and Moorish styles.
- It was inaugurated in January 1928 and soon rose to its fame. It attracted the famous and wealthy. It has hosted numerous personalities, some of which included F. Scott Fitzgerald, Clarence Darrow, Al Capone, Lou Gehrig, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
- After the death of Thomas Rowe, the hotel fell into the hands of his estranged wife, as Rowe, unfortunately, didn't leave behind a will. It then fell in disuse and deterioration during the Second World War.
- It is listed as one of the National Trust's Historic Hotels of America and is designated the only historic resort on Florida's Gulf Coast.
- The hotel today has 227 rooms for its guests, and amenities like beachfront pools, 6 restaurants, and a spa. All in all, it has 38,000 sq. Ft. Of indoor and outdoor venues to explore.
- Contrary to the usual legends about haunted sites, the pink palace has quite a romantic history. The ghosts here are far from causing any harm or trouble. The story goes that Rowe fell in love with a Spanish Aristocrat's daughter after spotting her at an Opera. Lucinda was a beautiful Spanish girl and was highborn. As her family objected to this affair, they took their daughter back to Spain. Heartbroken Rowe then would go on to build the pink palace years later.
- The Opera in which Lucinda acted was called "Maritana" and so, the heroine Maritana would become Lucinda and Rowe, Don CeSar. Their plans of elopement were unsuccessful and they would have no contact until a note, announcing Lucinda's death years later, would reach Rowe.
- Visitors say that the two lovers can be spotted strolling the premises and holding hands. Now, one wouldn't mind a ghost encounter of the kind.
