About Plaza Mayor
Plaza Mayor is a historical landmark situated in Madrid, Spain. It is situated at the heart of Spain. The construction of the plaza started in 1580 and was completed in 1619 on the order of Philip III. It covers an area of one hectare. It was declared as the Spanish Property of Cultural Interest in 1985. It could be visited between Monday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm and from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. No ticket is charged to visit the museum.

  • It took a long time to start the construction and to complete the monument. The architects were commissioned in 1577 but the construction started in 1617 and was completed in 1619.
  • There were 3 major fires in the Plaza. The first fire was in 1631, the second was in 1670, and the third fire in 1790.
  • The plaza has 237 balconies and ten entrances or exit gates. The plaza consisted of three-story residential buildings able to accommodate 50,000 people at a time.
