About Old City of Berne

Old City of Berne as the name suggests is an old city in the center of Bern in Switzerland. The city belongs to the medieval period. It is situated on a narrow hill while three of its sides are covered with river Aare. Most of the construction in the city is from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. It covers an area of over 84 hectares. It became a World Heritage Site in 1983.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Old City of Berne

The tallest minster all over Switzerland is located here in the Old City. There are also a large collection of bridges, churches, and Renaissance fountains in the city.
The city suffered a major fire in the year 1405, following which it was rebuilt in sandstone.
There was a tower from 14th century called Christoffelturm at the place where a bus station, central train station, and large road interchange existed now.
The other attraction of the place is Munster of Bern. It owns the tallest bell tower and largest bell all over Switzerland. The construction of the Cathedral along with the bell tower took about four centuries to complete. It also owns valuable glass-stained windows. The windows contain several heraldic symbols including the "Dance of Death" window.
Various other important buildings like Bundeshaus West, the central Parliament Building, and the Bundeshaus East are also situated in the old city.
