About Historic Town of Zabid
Zabid is a town on the western coastal plain of Yemen. The city was founded before the seventh century as it has a mosque which was built in 628 AD. It was the capital of Yemen in the period starting from the 13th century to the 15th. It was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1993 and became one of the World Heritage Site in Danger in the year 2000. The city was named after Wadi Zabid.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Historic Town of Zabid
- The town is home to the Great Mosque of Zabid which was built by Abu Musa Ashaari, in 628 AD. It is the fifth mosque according to the history of Islam.
- It also had the University of Zabid which was the center of Islamic education.
- The city has also given famous personalities like Amru bin Ma'adi Yakrib. An Arabian tribe named Zubaid is named after the city.
- The heritage sites of the city are in danger due to poor conservation. Also, forty percent of the city houses are changed to concrete buildings. The other houses which are not changes are in a deteriorating state.
