Frankenstein Castle as the name suggests is a castle located in Darmstadt city of Germany. It is located on the Odenwald mountain range at a height of 370 meters on the Bergstraße Route. The castle is known for its vineyards and its mild climate. The castle was built by Lord Conrad II Reiz of Breuberg before 1250. The castle was an inspiration for Mary Shelly who has penned a Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus in 1818.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Frankenstein Castle

  • Many stories are prevalent relating to the castle and its surroundings. But there are not proof if these stories are true or not but it gives a hint about the culture and tradition of the region
  • The story of Alchemist Dippel is very common. Dippel was known for the discovery of Dippel's Oil who wanted to purchase the castle in exchange for the formula. According to the belief, when Dippel was living in the castle, he did experiments with alchemy and anatomy for which he dug up bodies. It is also told that he had created a monster that got life by a bolt of lightning. Many of the local people believe that it actually happened.
  • One more story is about Lord George and the Dragon. According to the folk tale, there lived a dragon near the well at the castle who used to eat the villagers and their children. Lord George attacked the dragon and fight with him bravely. At last, they both deceased in the battle. The villagers made a marvelous tomb to give honor to the hero who saved their life. The tomb is still present at the Church of Nieder Beerbach.One more mysterious story told by the villagers is a fountain of youth. According to the belief, there was a tradition of testing of courage by old women of the nearby villages on the first full-moon night after Walpurgis Night. The winner was awarded rejuvenated to the age. There is no proof that the practice is shut down or is still prevalent in the villages.
  • The place was also a subject to ghost hunting investigations which was also telecasted in an episode of the television show "Ghost Hunters." They used an ultrasonic recorder that picked up signals that were interpreted as "Arbo is here" and the other was "come here." After which the team left the castle and declared that there is some paranormal activity in the castle.
  • The magnetic rocks are also present in the forest behind Frankenstein Castle. Here compasses do not work properly. It grabs the attention of local nature enthusiasts and witchcraft practitioners. The visitors can see magnetic stones but it is advised not to disturb any ritual going on. It is in second place after Mount Brocken in the Harz which is important for witchcraft activities in Germany.
