About Bahla Fort
Bahla Fort is an old fortress located in the Bahla town of Oman. It is located at the foot of the Jebel Akhdar. It was constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries. The fort was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1987 and was declared as an endangered site in the following year. It was removed from the list of World Heritage Sites in 2004. The fort is open for public access and could be visited from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm throughout the week except on Friday when the opening timings are 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Bahla Fort

  • As most parts of the fort were made with unfired bricks, the site is affected due to erosion. The drainage conditions are also bad. Though efforts are made to restore the building use of modern material is destroying the old heritage.
  • The fort is divided into three parts. Al-Qasabah is the oldest part of the fort, while Bait al-Hadith was made in the late seventeenth century or early eighteenth century by the Ya'riba dynasty. The most recent part is Bait Al-Jabal which was made in the 18th century.
