About Archaeological Border complex of Hedeby and the Danevirke
Danevirke is a border complex and fortifications situated in the Schleswig-Holstein state of Germany. It was constructed in the Nordic Iron Age in approximately 650 AD. It was made by Danes using timber, stones, bricks, and earth on the order of an unknown ruler. The wall is about 3.6 to 6.0 meters tall. It is extended to 30 kilometers from the Viking trade center of Hedeby near Schleswig crossing the Baltic sea coast in the east to the marshlands in the west. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2018.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Archaeological Border complex of Hedeby and the Danevirke
- Earlier it was believed that the Danish King Gudfred has ordered to make this wall in 808 to protect his territory from Franks invasion but later on it was revealed that the construction work of Danevirke was started much before King Gudfred's reign. The real initiator is still unknown.
- According to historians, the walls was made not just for military purpose but also for creating a short cut canal for shipping between the Baltic and the North Sea
- It was a powerful symbol of Denmark in 1800. It also had a significant responsibility during the both Schleswig Wars as a mental cultural blockade against Germany. The Cannon emplacement is also possible on the fortification which strengthens the army.
- There is also Viking Museum at the site where the visitors can get information about the Vikings. The visitors can enjoy the modern presentation and recreation of Haithabu in the outdoor park of the museum.
