Some Lesser Known Facts About Powerscourt House and Gardens

The Powerscourt House was originally built as a castle in the 13th Century by La Poer which transformed into the name Power.
The castle has 68 rooms on three floors.
The 15th-century owner of the estate, PhelimO?Tool was murdered by his long-term enemies, the Wingfields in 1603 at a place well-known as the Killing Hollow near the house.
After the killing, his grandson Turlough could not take the possession due to the rebellious acts and feuds of his ancestors which led to the forfeiture of the estates.
It was modified to like a mansion by the German architect Richard Cassels between 1731 to 1741 on the orders of then-owner Richard Wingfield.
Around 1857, Mervyn Wingfield undertook renovations of the house and built new gardens around it.
The estate was sold to the Slazenger Family in 1961 who are the current owners of the place.
A massive fire broke out at the house in 1974 and the renovations did not take place until 1996.
After restoration, only two floors were opened for the public.
Tara's Palace Museum of Childhood was relocated to the Powerscourt House in 2011 and houses many antique dolls, dollhouses, and toys.
The Powerscourt Waterfall is the highest in Ireland at 121 meters of height.
The house has also acted as a shoot location for many films and television shows.
