About Nimtala Crematorium
Nimtala Crematorium is a burning ghat where dead bodies are cremated according to Hindu rituals. It was founded in 1827. The famous Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore was cremated here after his death in 1941. It was also featured in various literature including an award-winning Malayalam novel 'Aarachaar' written by K. R. Meera. Other popular people like Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and Manik Bandopadhyay also started their afterlife journey from here. It remains open 24 hours throughout the week.

- It is said that the crematorium is often visited by Aghori Sadhus or ascetics who perform some post-mortem rituals by taking some ashes and leftover burnt bodies.
