About Oude Kerk
The Oude Kerk is an old church situated in Amsterdam. It is located in De Wallen which is now called the red-light district. It is surrounded by the Oudekerksplein square. Though the construction started in 1213 it was declared sacred by the bishop of Utrecht with Saint Nicolas in 1306. It became a Calvinist Church after its reformation in 1578. The church was made with Gothic architecture. It remains open from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm while on Sunday the timings are from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The church faced numerous renovations which are done by 15 generations of Amsterdam citizens. It is located near The NEMO Science Museum, ARCAM Amsterdam which you can see while visiting the church.

  • Many important people are resting in their graves in this church which includes Jacob van Heemskerck, Catharina Questiers, Willem van der Zaan, Johannes Hudde, among others.
  • Rembrandt was a regular visitor of the church. His children were christened in this church. The church is also a home to his wife Saskia van Uylenburgh's grave who died in 1642. There is an unbelievable natural phenomenon that occurs every year on 9 March (8 March in leap years) when her tomb illuminates with the early morning sun at 8:39 am. A breakfast event is organized in the church every year on this day.
