About Naumburg Cathedral
Naumburg Cathedral is a former cathedral situated in the town of Naumburg in Germany. The church was constructed in the 13th century using Romanesque architecture. You can visit the cathedral while driving through the tourist route Romanesque Road in Saxony-Anhalt. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July of 2018. The church is a double-choir three-aisled basilica having a pair of towers on both east and west end. It has two entries, however, the main gate is situated on the Southside from the gatehouse.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Naumburg Cathedral
- The church is home to the important early Gothic memorials like donor portrait statues of the twelve founders and the Lettner.
- The founder of the town was a powerful man named Ekkehard I of Meissen. His son founded a small parish church in the western part area around the castle. They also got approval from King Conrad II and Pope John XIX to shift the Episcopal See from Zeitz to Naumburg. After which church was consecrated and became an early Romanesque cathedral.
- In 1532, a huge fire injured the collegiate church which was enthusiastic to Mary. The only choir survived after the fire.
- The church is enriched with glass paintings, sculpture, and the harmonious combination of architecture which shows the changes in religious practices and visual arts in the 13th century. The sculpture that made these art pieces were called the "Naumburg Master".
