About Cologne Cathedral
Cologne Cathedral is a catholic church located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The construction of the church started in 1248 and completed in 1560. It is situated at just two-minute walking distance from Museum Ludwig. It is 157 meters long making it the tallest twin-spired church in the world. About twenty thousand people visit the church in a day. It has eleven bells. The church earned the designation of World Heritage Site in 1996.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Cologne Cathedral
- It is the largest Gothic church in Europe. Also, it is on the second rank among the tallest church in Europe after Ulm Minster and is in third place when considered the whole globe.
- Two graves were discovered at the time of the excavation of the oldest part of the church. It is estimated of the sixth century and was a boy also having grave goods and the second was of a woman estimated was a Wizard.
- The old Cathedral was destroyed by a huge fire in April 1248.
- It was also subject to aerial bombs at the time of the Second World War and received fourteen hits. It was easily recognizable due to its two spires and thus caused a heavy damage

- It was kept as a blackout and its floodlights were kept off to demonstrate its support for PEGIDA on January 5, 2015.

- It became a topic of great concern due to black discoloration which is due to sandstone reaction with sulphuric acid at the time of rain. It is estimated that acidic rain is due to air pollution.
