About South Park Street Cemetery
South Park Street Cemetery is an old cemetery located on the Park Street of Kolkatta, West Bengal. It was established in 1767 It was one of the earliest non-church cemeteries all over the world. It is assumed that it was the largest Christian cemetery which is situated outside Europe and America. It is home to 2000 graves and tombs. The cemetery was used until 1830 but now it is a protected site of the Archaeological Survey of India. It also has tombs of important British people like Sir William Jones, Walter Landor Dickens, Lieut. Col. Colin Mackenzie and more.

Some Lesser Known Facts About South Park Street Cemetery

  • In 1984, a business family initiated work to develop a cemetery into an arts center but Calcutta High Court ordered to stop the work. In between some of the graves including the grave of Charles Stuart was destroyed.
  • A Bengali film titled "Gorosthaney Sabdhan" (Beware in the cemetery) inspired from the novel of the same name by Satyajit Ray was filmed here

  • The cemetery is reportedly haunted and many people fell sick after visiting the place. Many people claim that their camera captured weird structures. Some people claim that they felt breathless even though they are not a patient of any breathing disease.
