About Sitka National Cemetery

It is the part of the US national cemetery system located in Sitka, Alaska (USA). It was established during 1868 ? 70 by the US army general Jefferson Davis. The burial grounds spread up to the area of 4.3 acres. As of 2021, there are approximately 1500 burials. It is managed by the US department of Veterans affairs. The official hours of the cemetery are from 8 AM to 4:30 PM on Monday through Friday.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Sitka National Cemetery

It is one of the important cemeteries of the 171 US national cemeteries system. The cemetery is managed as part of the Fort Richardson National Cemetery near Anchorage city in Alaska.
The site was uncared until 1921 after the military withdraws from the area in 1912. The rehabilitation of the cemetery was started by the efforts of the local people.
The cemetery is dedicated to served Veterans and their family. It is still active for burials.
There are two memorial cannons in the cemetery.
The notable interments in the cemetery include Governor James Brady, Olympic gold medalist Charles Paddock, etc.
In March 2012, the site is added to NRHP as a historic site of the nation.
