About Goodyear Farms Historic Cemetery
It is the burial place in the city of Avondale, AZ (USA). It was established in 1917. It is the old cemetery and presently maintained and owned by the City of Avondale. It is open for visitation from 6 AM to 7 PM. A number of Mexican migrants and -Americans who used to work in the Goodyear Farms were rested in this cemetery.
History
A rich American industrialist in the early 19th century named Paul Weeks Litchfield went to Phoenix in order to establish a cotton company during WW1 as the demand for cotton was so high in that era. He did become interested in the Salt River Valley area in the central part of the AZ state and purchased 36,000 acres. He built a cemetery called "Pioneer Cemetery" in 1917 for the employees of the Goodyear farms. It was later renamed Litchfield Cemetery. He had also built Litchfield Ranch also known as Litchfield Park on 5 acres of the land from the 36,000 acres which he purchased.

After arriving at the station one can hire a private vehicle or rental car and reached the cemetery in approximately half an hour as the distance between the cemetery and Osborn Ave train station is about 31 kilometers.

  • The cemetery was so rushed during the Spanish influenza pandemic which causes a number of deaths of the Litchfield Ranch workers. Approximately 1700 burials died from the Spanish flu in the cemetery and most of these burials are unmarked.
