About Elmwood Cemetery

It is the most prominent burial place in Birmingham, Alabama. It is the resting place of more than 100,000 people. The cemetery was established in 1900 by a fraternal organization. It is a public place spread up to the land of approximately 412 acres. It is owned by Dignity Memorial. It is part of the Dignity Memorial chain. The site is always open for visitation from 7 AM to 5:30 PM.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Elmwood Cemetery

A famous Mexican sculptor artist and architect D. Rodriguez made numerous concrete sculptures for the cemetery.
The graveyard was just for Whites till 1970. A family of a black soldier who died in Vietnam won a court case against the cemetery to allow their son to be buried there.
Talking about its structure, the place has 50 large blocks of various sizes. There is also a Babyland for the burials of newborns and children. Four mausoleums are also present in the cemetery.
In 2007, a body of a young black girl who was died in the Baptist Church bombing exhumed from Shadow Lawn Memorial Park and buried in this cemetery by her parents.
