About Wawel Castle

Wawel Castle is a castle situated in the Old Town area of Krakow city in Poland. It covers an area of 7040 meters square. The castle was built in the 13th and 14th centuries on the order of King Casimir III the Great. It features Gothic, Romanesque, early Baroque, and Renaissance architectural styles. It was designated as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. It could be visited between 9:30 am to 5:00 pm from Wednesday to Sunday. On Monday and Tuesday, it closes at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm respectively.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Wawel Castle

One interesting fact about the castle is that it was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site throughout the world.
The complex also contains Wawel Cathedral which served as a place for Polish monarchs to crown and burying them after their death. It also contains the tomb of Bishop Maurus.
You have seen a statue of Tadeusz Kosciuszko on the ramparts of king Wladyslaw IV Vasa. It was made by Leandro Marconi and Antoni Popiel and was placed here in 1921
The polish people must be proud of the fact that a piece of one of the columns of the castle was incorporated in the Chicago Tribune Tower into the upper-left part of the main entrance. This is a tribute to the Polish community in Chicago.
After independence, the castle was converted into a museum.
The largest of the five bells of the Sigismund Tower is the Royal Sigismund Bell which was cast in 1520 and was named in honor of King Sigismund I the Old.
