About Maruoka Castle
It is the 16-century castle still intact in the Kasumigajo Park in Sakai city, Japan. It was built on a small hill in 1576 by a samurai commander Shibata Katsutoyo. The site where the palace was built is now a public park that incorporated the castle, moats and a small-sized museum that features armour and other things of the former lords of the palace.

  • According to folklores and legends, the foundation of the castle was a human pillar. During its construction the stone base on which the castle intact kept collapsing. Then a liege suggested a hitobashira which means human sacrifice. A poor woman named O-shizu was chosen for the practice on a promise that one of her son will adopt by Katsutoyo and made a samurai. Her sacrifice allowed the construction and the base stone on where the palace was standing were constructed around her.
