Its possession passed on from father to son in the O?Bannon clan and by rivalry and conquest, In the 1600s, it fell into the hands of the Darby Family. The castle was the representation of pain and chaos for the Irish locals. It was finally burned down in the year 1922.

- The castle was originally known as Leim Ui Bhanain, meaning, Leap of the O'Bannons. The castle has since under-went extensive restoration and renovation over the years, in different time periods. - Two little giggling girls, allegedly named Charlotte and Emily, are also said to haunt the premises. They have been seen playing in the Main hall.
