About Larnach Castle
Larnach Castle is a castle located in Dunedin, New Zealand. It is a medieval age castle situated on the ridge of the Otago Peninsula. The castle was constructed in 1874 for entrepreneur and politician, William Larnach. It is now owned by the Barker family who purchased it in 1967. It was designed by architect R. A. Lawson in the Gothic Revival style. It was declared as a landmark by Heritage New Zealand in 2018. It is now open as a tourist attraction and could be visited throughout the week between eight to five.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Larnach Castle
- The owner of the house William Larnarch take own's life in the New Zealand Parliament building in 1898 after suffering personal and financial loss. The family sold the castle in 1906. It is believed that Larnarch's ghost still haunts the castle.
- The castle was used for filming the productions such as Hanlon and Shaker Run in the year 1985.
- It was also featured in the television shows like the New Zealand television show Ghost Hunt and the American show Ghost Hunters International.
- According to some college students, they saw a "Grey Lady" in the castle which appeared in the window. Also, another tourist felt some paranormal occurrence when an unknown force pushed him and his wife into the music room. They also said that when they enter one of the bedrooms something was suffocating them.
