About Himeji Castle

It is a 14th-century castle built on the hilltop in the Himeji city in Japan. The original form of the castle was built by a Japanese samurai Akamatsu from the Muromachi period in 1333. It was remodeled and renovated several times in history. It is currently a designated world heritage site that is well restored and preserved by the Japanese government. It is spread up to an area of 107 hectares.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Himeji Castle

It is the best model of initial Japanese castle architecture and even survived in the bombings of WW2. There are 83 rooms and the infrastructure made of stone, tile, plaster, and timber.
The castle was demolished in 1346 and 1601-1609 for reconstruction.
The castle made with advanced defensive systems of ancient Japan including three moats, loopholes for launching bolts, arrows, etc.
It is designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1993. It is the first site across the nation to register as that designation. Nowadays it is the most visited castle throughout the country. As of 2015, there are more than 28 million visitors visit the castle.
Aside from the designated heritage center, there are many parts and ancient things which considered as the Nation Treasures of the country.
In addition to its defensive system, there are still more than 1000 various shape loopholes present on the walls of the castle. There are stone or boil oil dropping windows that are also set at several points.
