About Durham Castle
Durham Castle is a castle located in Durham city of England. The castle was constructed in 1072 by the Normans on the order of William the Conqueror. It is located on the top of a hill above the River Wear opposite Durham Cathedral. It covers an area of 8.79 hectares. It became a building of University College, Durham in 1837. Only guided tours to the castle are allowed as over 100 students still live here.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Durham Castle
- The chapel is the pristine reachable part of the castle. It also has a huge Hall which was used as a Dining Hall by Bishop Antony Bek. It was subject to subsequent changes by other bishops, now it is 14 meters high and 30 meters long.
- The castle, Durham University, and University College are all included in the UNESCO heritage site to be protected in 1986.
- The castle was used as a command and observation post by the Royal Air Force at the time of the Second World War. The cathedral was saved by a miracle as Germany was planning a Baedeker Blitz on the Cathedral but fog blocked the pilot's view.
- According to some university students, a ghost lives in the staircase of Durham Castle. It is believed to be the wife of Bishop of Durham who was reportedly fell to death from its topmost heights.
