About Charleville Castle

Charleville Castle is a castle located in County Offaly of Ireland. It is situated at the border of Tullamore town close to the River Clodiagh. Its construction was started in 1798 and was finished in 1814. The castle was designed by Francis Johnston in a Gothic style. Many parties were organized in the castle at the time of Lord Byron. It was abandoned when Colonel Howard Bury left the castle and went to live in Belvedere House, County Westmeath. Now a day, it is maintained by Dudley Stewart. It also serves as a place to organize events like "fright night" which is a play by a theatre group named "Dearest Nancy, Darling Evelyn".

Some Lesser Known Facts About Charleville Castle

The castle was featured in the various television shows like Most Haunted, Scariest Places on Earth and also in Ghost Hunters International.
It served as the location for filming the movies like Becoming Jane and Northanger Abbey.
It is reportedly haunted by a ghost of an eight year girl named Harriet. She was the daughter of the third Earl of Charleville. She fell of the staircase and died in 1861. According to some witnesses, she was seen laughing, screaming and singing in the castle at night.
