About Castles of Bellinzona
The Castles of Bellinzona is a group of old forts and walls situated in Bellinzona town. The site is located on Alpine foothill. You can reach there by taking an elevator or trekking through steep and narrow streets from the city center via the city wall onto the castle grounds. It was designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. It remains open throughout the week between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Castles of Bellinzona
- The site consisting of three castles called Montebello, Castelgrande and Sasso Corbaro. Out of which Sasso Corbaro is the highest which is situated on an separated rocky promontory.

- The space of the castle was occupied during prehistoric times since an early Neolithic age.
- All of the three castles were made in different time periods. The Castelgrande was made in the 1st century BC at the time of Roman Emperor Augustus. The castle Montebello was made in the late 13th century. While the third castle was made in the 14th century after Gian Galeazzo Visconti's death.
- According to the historian, the Frankish invasion ended in 590 due to heavy resistance from the castle. It is said that a spear thrust killed the attacking commander and the invasion came to an end.
- There is also a museum situated in the south wing that displays the remains of the Neolithic village. Its ceilings are beautified with Casa Ghiringhelli and other collections including the Albergo Della Cervia.
