About Herengracht
Herengracht is an important canal in the canal belt of Amsterdam. It is about a 2.4-kilometer-long canal that lies between two well-known canals the Singel and the Keizersgracht. It starts from Brouwersgracht and finally meets Amstel. It has about eleven bridges like Anton Jolingbrug, Warmoesbrug, and Hendrick Jacobsz which helps to cross the canal. The canal is home to various tourist places including the Hendrick Jacobsz. The construction of the canal was started in 1612 with the efforts of Mayor Frans Hendricksz. It could be seen running within the city wall and is parallel to the canal which runs outside the city wall.

  • The canal crosses many tourist sites which included Herenmarkt which now became a children's playground. The popular West India House is located behind Herenmarkt.

  • A beautiful merchant house which was made for merchant Willem van den Heuvel also stood by the canal right side. Van den changed his name to Guillermo Bartolotti after making this house and is now one of the richest men in the city.
