About Writers Building
Writers Building is a popular building situated in West Bengal. It is an unused building that belongs to the government of the state of West Bengal. It was constructed over two hundred years before in 1780. The building was designed by Thomas Lyon. It is a 150-meter long building covering an area of 550k square feet. It served as the office of Chief Minister of West Bengal since independence up to October 2013. At the time, it housed thirty-four departments of the state government, and approximately six thousand employees used to work there.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Writers Building
- It is a remarkable place in Indian history. The Inspector-General of Police named Colonel N.S. Simpson who was known for his brutal oppression of Indian freedom fighters was assassinated here on December 8, 1930, by Badal Gupta, Dinesh Gupta, and Benoy Basu. After shooting him, three-man were surrounded by the police but fought bravely. In the end, Badal took poison and died while Benoy died in hospital after five days. Only Dinesh was caught alive and was hanged in July 1931. The statues are present in the building.

- The building is reportedly haunted and many passersby have heard cries and wails from the area during nighttime. Though investigations are made nothing is found but still the building is considered spooky and many people avoid crossing the nearby area especially during nighttime.
