About Windansea Beach
The Windansea Surf Shack is one of the oldest and most prominent beach landmarks in San Diego. The Windansea beach is a stretch of coastline located in the La Jolla area. It has a reputation as a surf break and has served as a home break to many notable surfers. It's a lovely location to spend one's weekend.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Windansea Beach
- The beach was originally called "Neptune beach". It was named after the oceanfront Strand Hotel, which was renamed Hotel Windansea ten years later by its owner Arthur Snell. The hotel, unfortunately, burned down in the year 1943.
- For surfers, the main peak here is a reef break. It has about 6 to 8 feet surf. Other surfs in the vicinity include the Middles, Turtles, Simmons, named after Bob Simmons who died at that break in 1954, and Big Rock.
- Woody Brown was one of the first surfers to catch waves at Windansea. He paddled out in the year 1937 and was followed one day later by local wave riders Don Okey, Townsend Cromwell, Woody Ekstrom, Dorian Paskowitz, John Elwell, etc.
- The Windansea Shack is a historical landmark. It was built in the year 1946 by Woody Ekstrom, Fred Kenyon, and Don Okey, the returning World War II surfers. It was destroyed by a huge swell in the year 2015 but was reconstructed by the locals in the next 6 months.
- In 1967, pop artist Andy Warhol shot his "San Diego Surf" film at Windansea and claimed it as the iconic surf breaks in Southern California.
- The Windansea Surf Club was founded in the year 1963. Its members included former high-school teacher Chuck Hasley, Mike Hynson, Butch Van Artsdalen, Rusty Miller, Joey Cabell, and Skip Frye.
- Tom Wolfe's book of essays, "The Pump House Gang" is based here. It talks of the chronicle of the teenage surfers who hung out at Windansea Beach in La Jolla.
