About Repulse Bay
Located in the southern part of the Hong Kong Island, Repulse Bay has earned it's place in the list of the most lavish residential areas in the world. It is situated by the beach. There are conflicting stories about the origin of its name, but it is said that in 1841, the bay was a base used by pirates, they also frequently took things from the merchant ships; the British "repulsed" them and prevented them from doing so. Hence the name came to be.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Repulse Bay
- It has been a major attraction for people around the world, with names like Marlon Brando and The Crown Prince of Spain, Juan Carlos among its noted boarders.

- The bay had a hotel, in the old English style, with an old-fashioned colonial Verandah, called the "Repulse Bay Hotel", which was later demolished in the 1980s.

- It was a tactical site in the second World War, during the "Fall of Hong Kong" or the fight for.

- It is believed that the bay was originally named "Chonghum Bay" by Commander Edward Belcher, an admiral in the Royal Navy.

- The renowned American journalist/writer, Ernest Hemmingway was a guest in the 1940s with his spouse Martha Gellhorn, when the two reached Asia to report on the war in China.

- Repulse Bay has an array of fun water sports to offer, like snorkeling, kayaking, skimboarding, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, wakesurfing,etc.

- During the time of the Japanese occupation of the country, the bay was given the Chinese name Shi-hau-wingshin.

- If you look around hard enough, you will find a building with a hole in the middle. According to the belief in Feng-shui (chinese geomancy), such a design is needed so as to not block the way of the dragon behind the building and provide access to the ocean.

- The famous Tin-Hau temple is a temple dedicated to the protectors of fishermen. There are two giant statues of Tin-Hau and Kwun Yum with a garden in the chinese style, as you head to the beach.
