About Ocean Beach
Another beautiful, popular beachfront neighborhood in San Diego is the Ocean Beach, also known as OB by the locals. It offers opportunities for water adventures like kite surfing as well as many other attractions from historic landmarks to hiking hot spots. It remains a crowded beach, with families and youngsters looking for a fun day or a relaxing and picturesque evening.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Ocean Beach
- The beach's original name was Mussel, for there was a large number of mussels available here. It was named Ocean beach by its developers, Billy Carlson and Albert E. Higgins in the year 1887.

- In the year 1915, John D. Spreckels built a 1,500 feet wooden bridge connecting Ocean Beach with Mission Beach. It was for the use of trolleys so as to see to the development of the communities connecting Ocean and Mission beach. It was later demolished in January 1951 and as a result, cutting off through traffic to Ocean Beach.

- Some of the San Diego Historical Landmarks in Ocean Beach are the Ocean Beach Library and Strand Theater. The community has two schools, Ocean beach Elementary and Warren-Walker. It also has multiple churches, a public library, a U.S. post office. The Ocean Beach Recreation Center, Dusty Rhodes Park, and the Robb Field athletic fields and skate park are all sites of recreation and leisure.

- Some of the popular summer activities that visitors enjoy are surfing, kite surfing, swimming, paddling, etc. There are ?fire rings? which permit hosting bonfire parties at night. Shipwreck searching is another fun and interesting activity you can partake. As many as 20 ships struck land here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During very low tides near Ortega Street, you can see the hull of King Phillip, a 19th-century clipper ship launched in 1856, sticking out of the sand.

- Other popular attractions nearby include the Sutro baths. They are beautiful historic ruins leftover from what was at one time a magnificent public bathhouse. When the popularity of the site began to dwindle, the owners converted the baths into an ice-skating rink. The original structure still remains and is free to visit and open to the public.

- In the 1800s, discarded gravestones and broken tomb markers were used shore up the Ocean Beach seawall. When the city's cemeteries were moved out in the 1920s and 30s, the unclaimed tombstones were recycled and used in various city projects. Tombstones show up on Ocean Beach during big winds.

- The invention of the wetsuit was done here at Ocean beach. Jack'O Neil, the surf innovator first created his prototype for the wetsuit, which changed the surfing world forever.
