Moonlight beach is situated in the heart of Encinitas. It is a state park famous for the variety of things to do. It has been a favorite beach for about a hundred years and offers everything one could ever want to enjoy in a day at the beach.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Moonlight Beach
- The beach is perfectly adequate for recreational activities for kids and adults. Popular activities include surfing, swimming, surf fishing, beach volleyball, and bonfires.

- The annual Switchfoot Bro-Am event is the biggest at Moonlight Beach. The event features huge bands, top pro surfers, and the entire surf and music world right on the beach. Every year, Moonlight Beach hosts the Encinitas Sports and Fitness Festival in May.

- It is said that the name ?Moonlight? came from the bootlegging era of alcohol. Al Capone ran a big operation in Mexico, he and his crews would traffic rum-runs up to areas off the coast. Some say that it was named moonlight because, in the 1900s, the locals used to visit the beach for midnight picnics.

- A certain land prospector by the name of J.S. Pitcher, who at the time owned many parts of Encinitas, constructed the playground, a bathhouse, several picnic areas, and also a dance hall.

- Linda Benson is a five-time women's world surfing champion, who learned to surf at Moonlight Beach in the late 1950s.

- Volleyball has remained a popular sport at the beach. Today, there are 3 courts at the beach and every year in the month of October, a Mixed Doubles Volleyball Tournament is held here. These tournaments first started in the year 1964.
